Did you know that the average teenager sends 3,339 text messages a month? Unless you are a girl, then the average is about 4,000. Most people think a cell phone is just a device used for entertainment but what would you think if cell phones could save a persons life. Well it can.
In this Ted Talk video “Nancy Lublin: Texting that saves lives” I learned that texting really can save a life. Many teenagers in todays age have serious problems occurring around them. Whether it is being depressed, being bullied, sexual abuse, or family problems. These are just a few examples of many problems that could be happening. Lets fa ce it, most teenagers keep their problems to themselves and do not tell anyone. But this can become very over whelming an lead to eating disorders, self harm, and even suicide.
Nancy Lublin created a website for teenagers wanting social change in America. Her organization texts about 200,000 kids a week about campaigns to help change America. One day the organization started getting texts from kids who were having real problems. Texts saying such things that they were being bullied at school, getting called names, started cutting, and even one text about someone who was getting sexually abused by someone in their own family. The people who were sending these texts said they were alone and had no one to talk too. On that day Nancy Lublin decided to build and wants to create a crisis text hotline.
Most teenagers feel it is easier to communicate their problems through text instead of face to face or even on the phone. This text hotline is fast, private, and you get a text back giving you real advice. The best thing is that it is anonymous. I personally think many teenagers would really benefit from this text hotline. You are never alone and there is always someone there to listen to you. Bullying and other self problems are very important and this video is helping me to realize what it important to me. Thank you for reading!
