I decided to watch the Ted Talk Video "How I Work To Protect My Women From Honor Killings" by Khalida Brohi. Although I thought this video was going to be very boring but then I learned many new things. This video was unique and interesting to learn about all this stuff that I had never heard of or learned before
Imagine by the time you were 2 that you had escapades your second manage or how about by the time you were 16 and your best friend had just been killed in an honor killing? Khalid starts of the video talking about her childhood and early life. Khalid was part of the indigious tribe called Brohi. She finds it difficult to have her traditional culture but then go to the modern day education. But she realizes that she has the most freedom out of all the women. When she was 16 her friend was killed in an honor killing. An honor killing is where's men or women are suspected of having relationships before or outside of marriage and are killed by their family for this. Khalida thought this was very wrong and wanted to do something about it.
Once a day she was allowed to use a computer for 10-15 minutes. She discovered Facebook. From there she created a campaign called WAKE UP and connected with people all around he world trying to raise awareness for women's rights. But soon her community found out and she started getting threats so she movies away. But Khalida was not done yet!
She started to create women's centers. Where women in her community could go and learn about women's rights and women's life. But men saw a change in women at home and the forced their wives not to go to these centers. Once again Khalida had failed but she was not stoping. So she created a women's tribal fashion brand. She also changed the campaign name to Sughar Hub. Which in Pakistan means skilled and confident women. Women were making money and contributing to the house hold so men had to think again before telling them what to do. Then in 2013 instead of having a center she launched the Sughar Foundation in the U.S. This foundation has helped so many women over the world to realize their rights and stand up for who they are!
I think this video was very inspiring. Something that every women and man should watch. I am so lucky to live in a country where honor killings do not exist and where I have my rights as a women. I think it is fantastic that one person crates foundation and made a change in the world
Thank you!
