Isn't it crazy to think that 10,000 people each year google: why am i ugly? Its sad to know that most of the people googling this is young girls. For my second reflection i watched the video "Why Thinking You're ugly Is Bad For You" by self esteem advocate Meaghan Ramsey. Most girls when they were younger had so much self confidence in themselves. I remember my cousins and I would dress up as Disney princesses and do our hair and just have so much fun. We did had so much self confidence in our selves and many other girls had that too. But when did that self confidence start turning into negativity? "When is it suddenly okay to not love the way we look?"
As Meaghan mentions int he video young and old teenagers would take just normal videos of themselves talking and asking "Am I Pretty or Ugly?" They would post them on you tube and ask people to write comments. People responded back with positive things and negative comments. Bu of course the negative comments were took to heart and not the positive ones. I think that social media has a big influence on why we think we are ugly. The number of likes you get on an Instagram photo should not justify how beautiful you think you are.
We are constantly under pressure form magazines, TV, movies and social media etc, to look like a size zero model. As Meaghan mentions in the video it really isn't hard to see why young women are so hard on themselves. Hash-tags like #thinspiration, #thighgap and #proanna are trending around social media. It is becoming so bad that girls will actually not go out and do activities with their family or friends just because they think that they look ugly. Girls are skipping class just because they think they look ugly that day. This is damaging to health because girls are not doing any physical activity and starving themselves so that they will look thinner. But doing all this is never the answer.
I think that our cult ure needs to stop basing everything on looks. Not everything is about looks.
